Talk about a super-food! Flat purple top turnips are a great source of vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and protein! Why is it called 'Flat purple top', well because the flat purple top of the turnip is what you will see above the surface ....Beneath is its white elongated tail. Baked, boiled or steamed, this healthy vegetable is a bit more bitter than most, but accompanied by some potatoes and the bitterness is easily softened.
Planting Guide: Needing cooler temperatures, these can be sown in early Spring, just prior to the last frost, or late summer as temperatures cool. In full sun or partial shade, sow 1-2" apart, 1/2"deep in moist, but well drained soil - trenches being best. Trenches or rows should be 1-2' apart. Compost is gracefully welcomed by this turnip. Water regularly - the soil must remain moist to reduce bitterness.
Harvest: 45-65 days, when roots are 3-4" wide. Gently extract from the soil using a garden fork. Remove leaves for eating or freezing and store the roots in a cool, moist place.
Tip: Be sure to keep weeds at bay to ensure a healthy yield and keep unwanted pests away.
