Broccoli, also known as 'Green Trees' - at least that is what my grandmother used to call them - are generally a family favourite - even with the younger ones. Popular in a number of cultures and cuisines - you simply can't go wrong with Broccoli.
When: This plant can take a while to grow, so best started indoors for 4-6 weeks before last frost and transplanted after about 4-5 days of hardening or plant from seed once the danger of frost is gone completely - late May.
Planting Guide: Sow 1" deep in moist soil, 18" apart, rows about 2' apart.
Harvest: 100-150 days from seed or 85 from transplant. The plant will produce a large center head which can be cut about 4-5" into the stalk. Thereafter2-3 smaller heads will form for continued harvesting. Yellow petals are a warning - harvest immediately to avoid impact to taste.
Water: Regularly - 1-2" per week.
Avoid: Nightshade plants like tomatoes, but grows well next to celery, onions, leeks and potatoes.
Tip: Broccoli can attract a variety of garden bugs and maggots. Drape plants with a lightweight fabric and tuck the edges down around them to prevent pesky bugs from getting in.
