These beans have an outer shell, which is why they are called 'shelling' beans. These beans need to be shelled to uncover the yummy goodness within. They are best in soups, steamed or fried. The reference to 'pole' means that they need a trellis or other support as they will grow upwards of 8-10' tall.
Planting Guide: Sow 1-2" deep, 6-8" apart, rows 2' apart, in well-drained soil and after the danger of frost has dissipated/soil is warm. Full to partial sun. Water regularly (soil, not leaves) - needing at least 1" of water weekly. Soil must be kept moist to ensure germination and growth. Plant requires poles/trellis for support and support must be assisted to prevent rot along the soil.
Tip: Soaking for a few hours prior to planting may speed germination.
Harvest: At any point, however, many prefer to wait until the shells are harder and 'snap' - about the size of a pencil. Gently pull each bean from the vine. Don't allow them to get overgrown though as it will affect the taste and texture.
Friendly Neighbours: cucumber, corn and strawberries.
