Sugar Loaf Chicory: seeds grow like an upright, tightly headed, very large Romaine lettuce. Beneath the outer, pale-green, mild tasting leaves lies a blanched heart of sweet, pale-golden white leaves with extraordinary flavour.

Another late harvest gem, Sugar Loaf Chicory resembles that of a large romaine. It gets it's name from it's sweet taste and bread 'loaf' like qualities. It is a perennial.

When: Plant in late summer for a fall harvest.

Planting Guide: Sow approximately 3 seeds, 8-12" apart in rows about 18" apart. Sow about 1/4" beneath the soil surface in partial sun.

Water: 1-2" weekly in well drained soil.

Harvest: Approximately 85 days by cutting at the base of the head, otherwise individual leaves can be harvested earlier in the season.

Tip: Fall crops as Sugar Loaf tend to be less troublesome for a 'green thumb' gardener and tend to produce a larger yield. As temperatures cool, try adding mulch to protect the plant from the elements.
